Bible reading: Revelation 5
Revelation 5:5-6 KJV
[5] And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. [6] And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
Brother Jacob wrote a great devotional yesterday on praising and worshiping our Savior. Chapter 5 continues that worship. Chapter 4 we worship the Creator, in chapter 5 we shift our focus to the Redeemer. There is absolutely no way we can fit everything I’d like to from this chapter into one devotion unless I made it a super long one, which Miss Dot wouldn’t read, so I’ll try and keep it brief. The chapter gives us 4 reasons, I believe, as to why we should worship Jesus Christ.
1. Because of who He is (5-6)
2. Because of where He is (6)
3. Because of what He does (8-10)
4. Because of what He has (11-14)
I’d like to focus on that first reason today. We worship Him because of who He is. John calls Him the “Lion of the tribe of Judah. The imagery of the Lion here speaks of “dignity, sovereignty, courage, and victory.” He is our champion. Next John says He is the “Root of David.” This speaks of our Lord’s humanity, but also His eternality. Think about it, Jesus was the Creator, He was the reason for David’s existence, but he was also of the lineage of David. The Jewish people of Jesus’ time had a hard time with this. How could He be God, and also David’s son? The next part of verse 6 is my favorite part. When John looked on Him he saw a Lamb. This speaks of sacrifice. It represents cleansing of sin by blood. I want you to notice the description of the Lamb though 6“ having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.” Seven in God’s Word is the number of perfection, we have here perfect power (seven horns), perfect wisdom (seven eyes), and perfect presence (seven Spirits in ALL the earth). We would call these (get ready to be excited, or at least I was) Omnipotence, Omniscience, and Omnipresence!! Pretty awesome reasons to worship our Savior today. Several times it is mentioned in chapter 5 that “He is Worthy.” Jesus really is worthy of our praise, our worship, our devotion, our mind, our will, our everything. Take a moment today and study over the other 3 reasons we should praise and worship the Savior.
