I AM PERSUADED THAT HE IS ABLE:

TO NEVER BREAK HIS COVENANT

Judges 2:1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.

This entire account of the children of Israel is covered in different books of the Bible and is referred to in others. It really gets as much coverage as any other story in the Bible. I guess because it is so applicable to so many areas of our Christian life. Every one of the struggles that the children of Israel had seems to show up in our life also. They are a picture of us. Their struggles are a picture of our struggles. Their sins are a warning to us of our sins. That is how God’s Word becomes like a mirror to us, so we can see who and what we really are.

*          James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:  24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

However, I believe all the recording of this in scripture is not as much about the children of Israel as it is about God. It is almost a documentary of the love and faithfulness of God. It is exhausting to think of the ups and downs of the relationship between God and His people. What should be so encouraging to us is to see that if God stayed faithful to them. Surely, He will stay faithful to us. If God still loved them, surely, He will still love us.

You see, if God did not break His covenant with them, He will not break it with us. In this verse, God makes it clear that He “said” He would not break His covenant, and He didn’t.

Let me remind you, they did not deserve for God to keep His covenant. And we don’t deserve it either. We don’t deserve for God to even make a covenant with us, let alone to keep it. God doesn’t do things for us because we deserve it, God does it because He loves us. God made a covenant with us, among many others, that He would never leave us or forsake us. Just that one covenant is more than we could deserve. That’s why God’s Word tells the following account of the children of Israel:

*          Psalm 105:41 He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river. 42 For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant.43 And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness:
