1 Samuel 16:13-14
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
Saul was believer in God. He trusted in God. He was used of God. However, God made a statement about Saul in 1 Samuel 15:11. “It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night.” The relationship between Saul and the Lord took a radical turn. Saul went from a humble young man to a proud individual. This led him to a spiritual conflict. The Spirit of the Lord was upon Him. Yet, he disobeyed. This meant he knew what was right but decided to act according to his own will. As a result of rejecting the word of God, Saul lost God’s blessing on his kingdom.
This passage tells us what happened to Saul when the Holy Spirit left him. An evil spirit troubled him. As believers the Holy Spirit doesn’t leave us. But when we reject Him there are side effects.
A saved individual who rejects Gods word loses Gods blessings on their life.
Saul was king until the day he died, yet he was not responsible for any victories after this moment. Gods’ purpose was to use Saul to defend the Israelites. He eventually died losing a battle to the Philistines. He may have remained king, but without the Holy Spirit he could not accomplish what he was made for.
A saved individual who rejects Gods can lose Gods protection in their life.
After the Spirit of the Lord left Saul, Saul lost God’s protection. David on two occasions had easy opportunities to kill king Saul.
A saved individual who rejects Gods word loses Gods peace in their life.
Saul was close to Samuel until this point. When their relationship ended Saul lost direction. He was troubled by an evil spirit. He became obsessive and vindictive. He eventually sought help from a witch. He never regained the peace that he had while filled with Spirit of the Lord.
As believers we will not lose the Spirit of God when we reject Gods word. However, we can lose God’s blessing, protection, and peace. He is to be our light and direction each day. Lets make sure we keep him first today.
