BIBLE READING: John 13

11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

In this chapter, Jesus knew that it was almost time to be crucified. The Bible says he knew that “His hour was come”. Jesus proceeded to show an example of humility. Jesus bent down to wash the disciple’s feet. He gathered the things that He needed, girded himself with a towel, and proceeded to wash their feet. Of course, Peter always had something to say. Peter normally assumed it was very shrewd, but what came out of his mouth ended up being very stupid. (pardon my French)

Peter first tells Jesus not to wash his feet because he wasn’t worthy. Then after Jesus reprimanded him, he said to Jesus to wash his head and hands also. Peters mouth always went into action quicker than his brain did. A lot of us are like that. Peter said that if Jesus did that, he would be totally clean. Then comes verse eleven:

* 11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

Jesus always knows, doesn’t He? In an outward display of self-serving spirituality, Peter makes an arrogant comment, but Jesus knew the real Peter. Despite how things appeared, Jesus knew what he would do, and Jesus knew deep down in his heart that Peter wasn’t totally clean.

Jesus knows you and I also. He knows everything in our heart. He sees in the sunken caverns of our motives, intentions, and actions. He never throws it in our face, and he did not to Peter either, but He knows. Imagine Jesus washing the feet of the very person that He knew would deny Him. Imagine giving breath every day to individuals like us who Jesus knows will fail Him miserably day after day, even sometimes denying Him in our own fleshly way. He knows.

This is also a reminder of a verse that comes to my mind:

* John 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

I am reminded that the only reason I am clean in the eyes of God, is because of the blood of Christ. While Jesus does know the real me, and He knows all the struggles of my flesh, I am clean through Christ. And in Jesus own way, He humbly washes my feet daily. He blesses me in ways that I do not deserve and have not earned. What a wonderful Savior we serve.
