BIBLE READING: HEBREWS 5

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

These are powerful verses that give us insight into the complexity that Jesus dealt with, being all God and all man. This passage teaches us that “in the days of his flesh”, Jesus desperately, passionately prayed to God the Father. God the Father is referred to as “Him that was able to save from death”. The Bible says that as Jesus prayed to His Father, He was “heard in that He feared”. Here is the picture that is presented:

As Jesus drew near to the cross, He feared the anguish and suffering that He would go through not just physically, but more importantly, spiritually. Nobody will understand the suffering that Jesus went through, as the perfect lamb of God, when He bore the sins of all mankind. He who knew no sin, took all of our sin. Why did Jesus fear? Jesus feared because He was man and God. Jesus wept, and cried, and prayed to the Father knowing that the Father could prevent the suffering that Jesus must go through. Jesus even asked the Father if He would take away the cup of suffering that Jesus must drink from. But the Bible says that Jesus was willing to do the will of the Father. Nobody took the life of Jesus, He gave it. Verse eight tells us that even though Jesus was the Son, He learned to be obedient as a servant, through the suffering He went through. And who received all the benefit from all that Jesus did?

Jesus went through all this and still remained “perfect”. He was the “perfect” Lamb.
* Hebrews 2:10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

“He became the author of eternal salvation”. Just because Jesus was God in the flesh, do not think that it was an easy walk in the park for Him to do what He did. He feared it, He dreaded it, He suffered through it, and victoriously He conquered it. Don’t forget how hard it must’ve been for God the Father to hear the desperate prayers and cries of His Son. Imagine to know that He could stop His suffering, but for the benefit of mankind and the forgiveness of sins that His Son did not commit, to turn your back on His “only begotten Son”. Take a few minutes today to tell the Lord how grateful you are for what He has done.
