Today, we again start our daily devotionals. Our prayer is that these devotionals will encourage you to daily spend time in God’s Word and learning the truths He has set before us. Myself, the Pastoral Staff of the Church, as well as occasional guests will be writing these devotionals from our own studies of the Bible.
God Bless,
Pastor Daniel Hawtree
Leviticus 4:27-29
27 And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty; 28 Or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge: then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned. 29 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering.
The book of Leviticus is God going to great lengths to give his people a way to be close to Him. God wanted a relationship with them. The issue God always has with people is sin. Sin separates us from Him. This passage shows how big of a deal even “little” sins were.
If a person sinned unknowingly, they had to take from their animals. They had to bring it to the tabernacle. They had to watch an animal they raised be killed. They had to watch the blood be poured out. They knew it was because of them that this animal had to die. I imagine that while they were walking that animal to the tabernacle, they must have regretted that sin. I imagine they would be very careful not to do it again.
In our lives how often do we sin without a second thought? We do it so carelessly. We probably do it so carelessly because we don’t see the cost involved. We don’t see how the spotless Lamb of God had to suffer and die to cover our sin. We don’t see the cat of nine tails, the crown of thorns, and the nails. He did all this so we could be close to him.
We will not be free from the curse of sin until we go to heaven. Yet, we can honor what the sacrifice was given for. We can be close to God. We can thank Him for His sacrifice. We can praise Him for His goodness. We can rely on His strength to live for Him today.
As a father, one of my favorite things is for my kid to want to snuggle up in my lap. I like for them to be close to me. I believe our heavenly father loves this as well. Can we snuggle up close to Him today and show Him how much we love Him?
