I AM PERSUADED THAT HE IS ABLE:
TO SET MY FEET UPON A ROCK
PSALM 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings
So, David tells us that God “brings us up”, “brings us out”, and “sets us up”.
The word “rock” refers to a “high cliff.”
• It speaks of a place of SAFETY, which is high out of the PIT we used to live in. We have been delivered from that life of darkness and deadness and have been lifted far above all that and set in a place of safety.
• It also speaks of a place of STABILITY. A rock is a whole lot different than miry clay. That mud we used to be in was slippery, slimy, and unstable. That’s what this old world is like. As soon as you think you can trust something, it slips away. It leaves you empty. You turn around and realize you’re still in a pit. The Lord is our solid “Rock”. We can trust Him. It is much like the song we used to sing, “the wise man built his house upon the rock”. But that old foolish man built his house on unstable sand. Thank God that there is a Rock which is higher than I! There is a place of stability and security, where I can stand without fear of falling. We have been set in that place by the mighty hand of the Lord!
The phrase “established my goings,” has the idea of “fixing one’s steps.” It means that God had a plan for David’s life. He had prepared a future for him. The same is true for each of us. The Lord reached into our pit and lifted us out by His grace. Then, He set us up on a stable Rock and leads us along a clear path. You see, the Lord doesn’t just save you and deliver you, He also has a plan for you that gives direction to the rest of your life.
* Psalm 37: 23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
“My hope is built on nothing less, Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.”
