Daily Devotional

A Ministry of the Kerwin Baptist Church

I am always excited to see what God is doing in the lives of young men who feel called to serve the Lord. It is not a one time decision, or even a monthly responsibility. It is a moment by moment, day by day walk with the Lord. I have asked for our pastoral staff and summer interns to share a devotion from each of them of what God is doing in their lives. I look forward to these next few days. As you read each of these devotions, may it remind you to faithfully pray for each one of these men.

I AM PERSUADED THAT HE IS ABLE

TO GIVE US WISDOM

If there was a pill you could take that would make you more successful in everything we do during the day, would you take it? What would you pay for it? Would it be more appealing if it would benefit your health without negative side effects? Proverbs 2 offers us this exactly. It is Wisdom.

Proverbs 2:1-8 (KJV)
1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.
What exactly is wisdom? The ability to judge correctly and choose the best course of action based on knowledge and understanding.
Wisdom comes from God as it says in James 1:5. So how do we obtain it?
Verse 1 says we are to “receive my words”. We can see and hear God’s words all we want, but to gain wisdom we have to give them entrance into our heart. We have to take down the walls of unbelief, bitterness, or pride in order to receive God’s word.

Verse 1 also says we are to “hide my commandments with thee” Hide means “to hoard or reserve.” We are to put God’s commandments in the one place no one can remove them, in our heart.
Verse 2 tells us the extent to which we should be searching for wisdom:
• “incline our ears” to be listening for wisdom as if you were trying to hear a secret
• “apply thy heart” to bend your heart to understand, not assume you understand
Verse 3 & 4- Tells us how much we are to crave it:
• “criest after knowledge” call out
• “liftest up thy voice” actually ask verbally
• “seekest her as silver”
• “searchest for her as for hid treasures”
We need to understand how desperately inadequate we are to fulfill God’s plan for our life that it causes us to seek God’s help to accomplish it.

Proverbs 2:10-11 (KJV)
10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
Wisdom is something we lack, but God makes available to us. When we access wisdom, we allow God to change us and guide us throughout the day. When we access wisdom, we will have a closeness to the Lord and be more productive during the day. Is the pursuit of wisdom important enough to you today?
