BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 5

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

SALT AND LIGHT
I have often looked at this passage and preached on this passage. Much of what we are told here is easily understood and obvious. There are some things that we must look a little deeper to fully understand. There is no way to exhaust all of that in one devotional. There is one little tidbit of information that I wanted to share with you today.

The Bible says that as Christians, you and I are to be salt and light to the world. If salt is no longer potent, it doesn’t do any good. If a light is covered and hidden, it does not serve its purpose. We all know the various uses and purposes of salt. We also know the various applications of light in darkness. We all understand that. However, I want to make this observation:

SALT IS SOMETHING YOU EXPERIENCE, LIGHT IS SOMETHING YOU SEE

You and I do not know if salt is good or bad, unless we taste it. We do not know if salt is still good unless we use it to cure something and find out later that it did not do it’s job. Salt is something that is experienced. It’s something that is tasted. This means that the way we treat people, the way we interact with people, and our relationships with people are very important to God. That is where we find out if the salt is still good. The experience that people have with us should make them a different person.

Light is something you see. It’s not necessarily something that you feel or touch. It is something that you notice. It is something that changes the environment. Let me put it this way:
* LIGHT CHANGES THE ENVIRONMENT, SALT CHANGES THE PERSON

You and I need to be the kind of testimony that people can see, and notice. Our life should change the environment of where we go. But the way we interact with people is what should convict them. Our light should make them take notice, but our salt should make them want to change. Despite what your doctor might say, salt is good in this case.
