1 Samuel 16:10-11 (KJV)
Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
Why does God choose to honor certain people? No one is truly deserving of honor. It’s only by God’s grace that there is any good in us. This passage tells us of an unlikely person to be honored. David was insignificant in his own home being the youngest of 7 sons. His own father didn’t regard him as a possible new king. In reality he did nothing to deserve this honor besides seeking God. What is fascinating is that none of the others who look the part were selected. They had to stand there and idly look on while David was annointed. Jesus referenced this same phenomenon in Mark 6:4, “But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.”
At this moment David was filled by the Holy Ghost. This was no small thing. At this moment the bible doesn’t say anyone else on earth was filled with his spirit beside Samuel. The nation was about to witness the rise of greatness from one of the most unlikely places.
God chooses people he uses from unlikely places. Joseph was the second youngest out of 12 sons. Samuel was the son of a common man. Mary was a simple girl. Peter was a fisherman. Most people in the scriptures were not people who were affluent, well connected or had great personalities. The common trend among them was they had a heart for God. When they were presented with an opportunity to obey God they submitted to Gods will.
This is what God wants for us. He has unique purpose for each of us. He does not tell us what it is in advance. There are many who believe David did not even know he was being anointed as the next king as it was happening. Even though we do not know all that God will bring to pass in our lives God asks us to do two things. He asks us to trust Him and Obey.
When Bro. Joe became pastor at Kerwin I doubt he knew what to expect. I am sure there were difficult seasons. What is obvious to all of us who have spent any time with him is this, He trusted God and obeyed Him. God truly honored Bor. Joe. Now he can look back in amazement at what God has done at Kerwin.
My challenge to you today is simple. Will you live in a way today where you can look back later and be thankful you trusted and obeyed God.
