I AM PERSUADED THAT HE IS ABLE:
TO USE OUR CHILDREN TO DO GREAT THINGS
I Chronicles 29:1 Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
The first thing I want to discuss is David’s statement, “my son, whom alone God hath chosen”. Hear this, GOD DOES THE CHOOSING. David was a little upset because God would not let him build the temple because of some unfortunate past decisions. David desperately wanted to build the temple, but God had chosen Solomon to do so. You and I will do well to make peace with the fact that God does the choosing. We do not understand God’s choice sometimes, nor may we agree with it. Why does God choose certain people to do certain things? Why did God choose me to do the things He has called me to do? Why did God choose you? We do not know. Why did God choose for me to be born in America? Why did God choose for me to born into the family I was born in? We could do this all day.
There may be some things in your life that you feel are unfair and unfortunate that God has allowed. I have counseled with people about these things:
Why did God put me in a broken home?
Why did God choose to give me a mate that was unfaithful?
Why did God choose to give me cancer?
Why did God choose to allow my baby to die?
Why did God apparently choose for me to never get married?
Why did God choose to put me in a dysfunctional home?
Now obviously many of these things God did not cause, but some of these things He did allow. I do not have the answer for all these things, but I do know this. God is sovereign, and He does the choosing. You and I just do not like it when we are not in control.
I also want to mention, to the parents, that it is important for us to understand that God has “chosen” our child for a purpose. God has a plan for everyone. He has chosen them to do something specific, and special. As parents, we need to teach our children that principle. We need to emphasize the importance for them to find what God’s will is for them and to do it. They need to find God’s choice in a mate, God’s choice in a career, and God’s choice in a path.
* Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
As a young man growing up, my parents constantly spoke of the importance of God’s will in my life. I knew that God had chosen me to do something special, because my parents told me so. We still have much to discuss in this passage but let me say this. You and I should thank God every day that He does the choosing. If the choices in our life were up to us, we would make a horrible mess of things. Can I get a witness?
