Proverbs 1:2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
The first goal of the book of Proverbs is for the reader to know what wisdom is. Wisdom is knowing what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. Wisdom is the ability to see both sides of a situation as a result of a disciplined mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” There are two important things I want to mention about this verse; the first being what God has given us. At salvation God gave us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit doesn’t give us fear. If we are making our decisions based on fear, we do not have wisdom. To have wisdom we must have a relationship with Jesus Christ and be walking with Him because He is the source. Secondly the verse says God gave us a sound mind. This means a disciplined mind. A disciplined mind can see a situation and wait to make judgment. A disciplined mind is willing to accept that they are not always correct on every issue and be willing to learn. The sad thought in our society today and even in our churches is that we have lost the ability to admit we may be wrong. When this is the situation, we are admitting to those around us that we lack wisdom. What our church and world needs today is believers filled with wisdom. May we be humble enough to admit to God today that we need His wisdom?
