I AM PERSUADED THAT HE IS ABLE:
TO EXALT HIMSELF
Isaiah 2:17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
Man, sure has become “lofty”. This Hebrew word literally is defined as “pride”. God will bring down the pride of man. Isaiah is a prophetic book. There is a large amount of “prophetic” and “pictorial” information given in this book. It points to the coming savior, and also highlights the sins and shortcomings of God’s people. A promise is given here in this passage, and the promise is that one day, God is going to bring down the pride of man.
There is not enough room at the top for God and man. Someone has to be in the top position. Since sin came in the Garden of Eden, man has fought to take God out of the place of exaltation and has tried to put themselves there instead. Man does not like to have to obey. Man does not like to be told what to do. Man does not like to have authority over him. We want to do what we want, when we want it, and how we want it. We have taken God out of the authority of our schools, our government, our culture, and even in some of our churches. We have become so very humanistic, which means to exalt man. It has become more important to please man, than to please God. When a preacher tries to share God’s Word, people do not like hearing that God says that things should be a certain way. God’s Word is not obeyed, respected, or even acknowledged. God is laughed at on TV shows, made fun of by entertainers, and mocked by our media. Wow, I am glad I got that out of my system. You did not read this devotional to get even more discouraged.
My point is that man has more pride now than ever, and man has become so “haughty”. Man has no shame about rebelling against a Holy God. But there is sobering news. There is a day coming when God will break that pride and bring down that arrogance. Listen to this, even if man will not exalt God now, God will exalt Himself when that day comes. Either way God will be “exalted”.
I love this phrase in verse seventeen, “the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day”. Political leaders will not be exalted, kings of countries will not be exalted, entertainers will not be exalted, and even you and I will not be exalted. It will be “the LORD alone”. Why not get ahead of the process and go ahead and exalt the Lord in your life today. Voluntarily step down from the top and put God where He deserves to be.
