Psalm 29
All of us at times like to think we’re important, important to our family, important to our employers, and we are. Sometimes we like to think that we have some degree of authority, and even power, and again that can be true, but in Psalm 29 we see real power, real authority. We realize how small we actually are compared to the greatness of Almighty God when we read and study this Psalm.
Verse 1-2 is an invitation of Praise to God. The phrase “O ye mighty” more than likely is referring to angels, and heavenly beings as well as the children of God. We have an invitation to worship the Lord today, an invitation to approach His throne. There are angels that their entire existence is spent worshiping and praising God. Accept that invitation and give God the glory that He’s due, He’s worthy!!
Verse 3-9 describes a powerful thunderstorm that David either witnessed or was recorded in history. Notice the phrase “Voice of the Lord” is used seven times (biblical number of perfection) in this passage, and David uses it to refer to thunder. Verse 7 he writes “divideth the flames of fire” here he refers to lightning. This storm was so powerful it splintered the mighty cedars of Lebanon (5) it moves and destroys the mountains of Lebanon and Sirion (6), mountains that were considered to be owned and controlled by Baal. The great thunder shook the earth so much that deer went into premature labor (8-9) leaves the trees that are still standing completely barren (9) This is awesome power, power not possessed by us.
Verse 10-11 we see God’s sovereignty. This storm made David think of the great flood. He says that God was in control, God was the King. All of this great power, and yet look how He is gentle with you and me in verse 11 The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace. Unmatched power, but He loves us so gently. What an amazing God. I’m humbled today in His presence. I saw an idea from one commentator and that was to next time you are in a thunderstorm read this Psalm aloud and worship the Lord because He’s worthy!!
