BIBLE READING: HEBREWS 2
1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
In chapter one, we were told that Jesus literally upholds all of creation with just His Word. We were also told that God speaks to us through Jesus by the Word. We were also given many other facts in the first chapter so that we could fully understand how important the truth of God’s Word is. So, chapter two starts with the word “therefore”. I was always taught that when you read the Bible, and you come across the word “therefore”, stop and see what it is there for.
“THEREFORE, WE OUGHT TO GIVE THE MORE EARNEST HEED”
Because God’s Word is so important, because God the Father and Jesus the Son speak to us through it, and because the Holy Spirit convicts and changes us through it, we need to pay extremely close attention to it. We need to listen to it, learn it, memorize it, study it, meditate on it, pay attention to it, and devote ourselves to it. Why?
“LEST AT ANY TIME WE SHOULD LET THEM SLIP”
This phrase tells me a couple of things. First, that you and I are prone to neglect the Word of God. We are prone to proceed in our everyday life without considering what God’s Word has to say about it. We tend to neglect its warnings, we tend to neglect its truth, and we tend to neglect its instruction. This word “slip” means to flow by, to pass unnoticed. How many opportunities do we have to hear God’s word and we allow it to pass by? It is easy for us to do. God says to pay close attention, because if we are not careful, we will allow the important Word of God to pass right on by.
Second, we can let things “slip” at “any time”. That means if we are not careful, in a split second, we can let our guard down and make a decision that can drastically damage our life. It can happen at “any time”. We are never safe. We can never relax. We must stay in God’s Word every day and keep it on our minds all day long. How careless it would be to have copies of the very Word of God all around us, and yet never really apply ourselves to it. How careless it would be to have copies of the Word of God all around us, and never read it. What have you let slip lately? Have you given the “more earnest heed” to the word of God today?
