I AM PERSUADED THAT HE IS ABLE:
TO HEAR EVERY WORD WE SAY
Matthew 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
We all know this. We all need a reminder of it occasionally, so here it is. The Bible says we will give an account for every “idle” word that we speak. This word “idle” means inactive, lazy, unemployed, useless, barren, idle, slow. God hears the words that we say even when we are not thinking about what we are saying. It means when we are lazy and unguarded with what comes out of our mouth, God hears that.
That is where we need to be the most careful. That is when we get in trouble. Whenever we are lazy and unguarded with our words. When we flippantly say whatever we want to say is when we usually make a mess. We cannot use the excuse, “I just wasn’t thinking about what I was saying”, or “ I didn’t really mean it“. God will hold us accountable for those things we say.
God tells us in verse thirty-five that when our heart is right our words will be right. And when our words are wrong, that’s a sign that our heart is wrong. You see, we should not have evil come out of our mouth even when we are not thinking about it. It shouldn’t even be in there. Even when we are unguarded, our heart should not have that stuff in there anyway. If it’s not in there it won’t come out. You know this verse:
* Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
There is good news though. Verse thirty-seven tells us that although our words can condemn us, our words can also justify us. May we determine to get our heart right today so that our mouths can be right also. We need to guard our heart so that our mouths will automatically be guarded.
